Welcome from the Director

You are making a difference!

Dear FSC Certificate Holder,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to FSC. We are actively promoting responsible forest management worldwide and you are helping us to make a difference.

Forests play an essential role in all of our lives. They cover 31 percent of total global land area and provide livelihoods for over 1.6 billion people. They also protect most of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and supply an important trade in forest products. The global efforts to manage forests in a way that benefits present and future generations is a mission we share together.

FSC was established, to provide a practical and meaningful way for businesses and consumers to make responsible choices and become part of the solution. This is why your decision to support good forest management through the production, use and promotion of FSC certified products is so important. You are helping drive change through the supply chain and bring direct benefits to the forest, such as protecting biodiversity, indigenous peoples' rights, worker’s rights, and areas of significant environmental or cultural importance.

The credibility of FSC's standards remain unmatched and we are committed to maintaining the integrity of the system and brand through internationally recognized standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services. We acknowledge and greatly value the contributions, commitment and support from our growing community.

Together, we are making a difference for forests and people worldwide, and ensuring that forests meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. Thank you for your continued support of our mission.

About Kim Carstensen

Kim Carstensen

Kim Carstensen is the Director General of the Forest Stewardship Council, a position he has held since October 2012. He was selected to succeed Andre de Freitas with the unanimous support of the FSC Board of Directors, who recognised that Mr. Carstensen’s proven track record as a global leader within the environment and development sectors make him extremely well-suited to consolidate FSC’s position as a global leader in responsible forest certification.

Prior to joining FSC, Mr. Carstensen managed FairGreenSolutions, an environmental strategy and sustainable development consultancy that, among other things, helped link the concepts of ‘Green Economy’ and sustainable development for clients in the Global South.

His strategic approach to environment and development issues comes from a long history of global leadership at WWF, most recently as the leader of WWF International’s Global Climate Initiative, where he led the organisation’s development of nationally relevant and climate change programmes in the world’s key economies and its push for global climate action across governments and businesses. Prior to this he was the CEO of WWF Denmark, where he worked on issues related to global environment and development policy, and to environment and development projects in the Global South.

Mr. Carstensen’s broad development experience also comes from his prior role as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Danida (Denmark’s Official Development Assistance Agency), where he participated in broad discussions of development issues in all sectors, and from his academic training as a sociologist.
